delicate . industrial . [jewelry]
delicate . industrial . [jewelry]
In the simplest of explanations, caged by car is the jewelry line of Caroline Razook (aka “car” to those who know me), an architect in the [New York] city. The basic concept is straightforward...take some materials that are delicate and some that are industrial and let them co-exist.
A further explanation addresses the question of why – why “caged” as a name? The word cage, and extended iterations (caged, to be caged, caging) does not typically render positive connotations. References to metal wire and bars used to detain, confine, enclose something or someone are most common. But, a cage can also be something that acts to contain an inner object in a protective manner, such as the body’s rib cage. Whether the inference holds positive or negative value, the basic notion is that there are two entities – one inside and one outside. Typically, there is a juxtaposition in materiality of the two. Both are visible. Both are legible. Both are relative to the world around them. Both have value.
So, still the question of why exists. Because a cage draws attention to whatever is contained, it acts an indication of a situation. caged jewelry seeks to draw that attention to you – the wearer. You are the situation. Some of the cages are loose; some are rigid. Some are more defined; some less so. Some are light and airy to point that their existence is forgotten. The boundaries of inside and outside blur. All of them, though, are made with materials that do not endorse or utilize resources that socially or physically cage another human being or animal. All materials are conflict free.
Because all caged jewelry is hand made in New York City by car, there will be some slight variation in the pieces.
